Not-so-random Acts of Kindness.
How is your September going? Are you feeling good? Busy? Overwhelmed? We feel like sometimes we just need a moment of happiness to fuel the rest of our day and keep that smile on our face. However, in our busy lives, we tend to forget about that self-love - and we can't have that. Solution - throw kindness around like confetti! Showering others with kindness is a sure way to bring the warm fuzzies back to you. Imagine doing something super nice for someone and seeing the smile on their face - doesn't that make you smile? Even if you're not feeling up to it, try these SIMPLE acts of (fun) and kindness and feel that little smirk appear on your face. They'll take you LITERALLY 30 SECONDS. Ok, maybe a minute - but we all have a few of those minutes to spare.
30 SECOND RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS THAT WE THINK COULD CHANGE SOMEONES DAY.
Sometimes one moment of your time can brighten someone's day.
We see all these random act of kindness ideas that involve you paying for someone's coffee, plugging a parking meter, giving a gift... While these are all nice, kindness doesn't need to come with a price tag. Here are 7 acts of kindness that don't cost you a bunch of money.
1. Send someone a text (or snap or DM) out of the blue.
Let them know how amazing they are. Tell them why they're important to you. You never know when someone's feeling low and just need to know they are appreciated and loved.
2. Food is the way to the heart
Give someone some food. Sounds funny, but food is something that is important to everyone. So save a piece of that homemade zucchini bread for a coworker. Share your garden vegetables with your friend. Make an extra sandwich to give to the homeless person you pass on your way to work. Share, share and then share some more.
3. Compliment someone. Not on the way they look.
"Hey - I really liked the way you talked to that angry customer, you were really kind and understanding". "Hey, I just love when you enter the room, you're warm like sunshine"."Hey, you're a really great friend, thanks for always being here for me". "Hey, thanks for explaining that to me, you're a really good teacher". Think of compliments beyond 'nice hair' or 'cute outfit'. But, if someone is wearing something that you absolutely love - try saying "Wow! You look really great in that shirt!" instead of "I like that shirt, where'd you get it?". It's all about making someone else feel good - what you put out in the world comes back to you!
4. Stash a secret note in someone's belongings
I'm a culprit for opening up a friend or coworker's notebook in the middle of all the pages and writing a fun note, that they'll (much later on) find when they finally flip to that page. "Hey friend! You're awesome!!" is all it needs to be :)
OR rip a page out of your notebook, write something like "You are strong, beautiful and loved" then stash it in your friends backpack or purse, or car, or drawer... you get it!
5. Hug someone for 8-20 seconds
Oxytocin is one of the most powerful neurotransmitters in our brain. It's a quite unique chemical compound that can only be found in mammals and requires specific stimulating techniques in order to be released naturally. One of these incredibly simple technique is hugging.
After years of experiments scientists have concluded that only physical touch between humans, especially loved ones, can facilitate the most potent secretion of oxytocin. It has been proven that hugging for up to 20 seconds can create such an emotional cocktail in two people that a strong bonding might emerge instantaneously. The logical explanation of this phenomenon is that a person with high levels of oxytocin in their system is more likely to be a lot happier, hence "contaminate" you with positive emotions through hugging and therefore make you happier and earn your trust.
Last but not least, scientists suggest that you need to experience at least eight hugs a day in order to feel happier and more content with life.
It's SCIENCE PEOPLE!
6. Be courteous.
Hold the door open for others. Hold the elevator open when someone is running to catch it. Wave at the car that let you in. Say please. Say thank you. Every time.
7. Listen. Actually listen.
This one may take longer than 30 seconds, but it's super important. When you ask someone how they are, really listen. Listen with no intention of responding right away. Ask them more questions about their life. Sometimes people want to share and it will make them feel good that you find their life important.
8. Last, but not least. SMILE.
Even if you are in the middle of something. Even if you don't feel like it. Even if the other person isn't smiling at you, or doesn't smile afterward. SMILE.
The biggest lesson in kindness is...
Forget the expectations. When doing something for someone, don't expect that if you do something for them, that they should do something in return. Not everyone is going to reciprocate, but don't let that stop you. Be the light in the world!
We hope the thought of these acts of kindness inspires you to make someone's day great!!
