GORP Star of the Month - Sarah!

At GORP, we LOVE to share the LOVE. And we are so grateful for each individual that enters into our lives - look at me getting all smushy... Anyway... As you may or may not know, all of our GORP bars are made in small batches, by hand! We thought we'd introduce you to some of the amazing people that make your GORP Bars taste so yummy!

Check out our first GORP Star of the month!

Sarah has been with GORP for about a year now. She always brings her smile and witty, hilarious comments and songs with her. For example, while packaging one day, our packaging machine was acting up, making it difficult to get the job done. So Sarah sang:

(to the tune of 'Rude' by Magic!) "Why you godda be so rude? You godda package it anyway. Package that GORP. Package it anyway..."

Can you see why it's hard not to laugh around her?!

Here are some facts about Sarah:

  1. What's your favourite way to be active?

Down Hill Skiing!!! And working in my friend's 1.5 acre garden for her veggie stand.

  1. If you could have a super power, what would it be?

I wish I could sprinkle peace & love dust on people so they were kind to one another. And maybe hug a tree.

  1. What's your favourite GORP flavour and why?

Cocoa Hemp & Almond!!! It's cocoa-y goodness tricks me into thinking I'm eating a chocolate bar. It's also my go-to bar for "that time of the month" when I'm craving junk food. I'm satisfied and don't feel the post-guilt of what I just ate.

  1. Why do you love working at GORP? Or share a funny GORP story.

I love working at GORP because of all the amazing people that I work with. Everyone makes you feel apart of one big family. Their good energies constantly swirl around our work place and makes it easy for me to keep a smile on my face. GORP IS the best company I have ever worked for. And I love my boss! She is so passionate, very attentive, she spoiles us rotten and has the best laugh!  She is the definition of community.

  1. Share a healthy recipe or workout

Gorp has changed my life-style in a GOOD way! I don't have a recipe but I've learnt the importance of eating clean natural foods and staying away from processed and high sugar foods and drinks. I've learnt it's best to make life style changes than go on a diet.

Thank you so much for working with us Sarah - Someone thinks you're awesome... and it's US!

Welcome Mikhail & Ellie - Power Team!

At GORP Headquarters, we get inspired by so many people. Some are friends and family, some are famous, and MANY are athletes. For this reason, Colleen decided that GORP should start sponsoring athletes, given it's right up her alley - having dabbled in triathlons, running and obstacle race herself. She knows the importance of putting the right things in our bodies, to get the energy we need to fuel our athletic adventures!

While we have a solid handful of amazing athletes that we sponsor (which you will hear all about soon!), we'd like to start with our newest power team, Mikhail Gerylo and Ellie Schwartz! Mik & Ellie stopped by the GORP headquarters this week for a meeting and we all hit it off right away! They are sweet, fun and SUPER ambitious (which is SO inspiring!). Mik and Ellie met in 2013 and have been training and racing together ever since! You know what they say... the couple that trains together, stays together! (and now, the couple that GORP's together, stays together?? :p )

Check 'em out!!

How awesome are they?! Here's a bit more about them:

Mikhail Gerylo

Age: 26
Hometown: Winnipeg, MB
Occupation: Physical Education Teacher
Sport of Choice: Obstacle / Spartan Race

How did you get into the sport?

{MIKHAIL} I did my first half marathon (Mantioba) IN 2012. Coming from a Kinesilology, multi sport and personal training background, I was able to train but still surprised myself when I came in 13th overall that day running a 1:20 half! I enjoyed training towards a race and the feeling of competition along with pushing myself past limits on race day. Although I enjoy running, I strive for a balanced functional fitness mindset when training. After the Marathon I decided to look into obstacle racing knowing this would test each part of my mind and body. Soon after I found Spartan race and the community behind it! Spartan offers obstacle races ranging from 5k-50+ so I decided to sign up for the Ottawa Beast (27k) that summer. Thanks to Garbage hill and lots of functional fitness training I was able to podium in Ottawa. This is where I realized the great community, competition, challenge and enjoyment of Spartan race and obstacle racing! Obstacle racing guarantees to bring out any physical and mental weaknesses you have but it also gives you feelings of accomplishment and pride when you cross the finish line, no matter if you come in first or 500th.

If you could be an animal, what would you be and why?

Definitely a Dingo. This animal is cooperative, agile, loyal, restless, a runner and lives outdoors. Plus I’d be able to live in Australia!

What's your favourite flavour of GORP bar?

PB-Apple or Cocoa, Hemp and Almond!

What are your favourite hobbies?

Trail Running, functional gym circuits, teaching, coaching, reading, biking.

Your Hero or Inspiration?

The words of Eric Thomas inspire and motivate me on a regular basis. Bear Grylls is a man of no excuses, hard work, passion, adventure, learning and strength.

How have GORP Clean Energy Bars helped you?

Training for the Ultra Beast (Spartan race) in Sun Peaks while training and in race GORP helped fuel me mid and post-race. They also help me along with long training sessions.

Ellie Schwartz

Age: 22
Hometown: Born and raised in Winterpeg, Manisnowba. I mean Winnipeg, Manitoba!
Occupation: Program Coordinator - Residential Campaign for the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation
also: Teaching Barre classes on Wednesdays 7PM-8PM and Sundays 12PM-1PM at Awesome Hot Yoga and Barre!
Sport of Choice: Obstacle / Spartan Race

How did you get into the sport?

{ELLIE} The summer of 2013 I decided to do Mud Hero and the Dirty Donkey race, immediately I was hooked on the mud, the running, the adrenaline and the all around fun. When I first started seeing Mik later that year, we were talking about what is out there to push ourselves and he mentioned that he had looked into it and wanted to register for the Spartan Beast 7 months away. He asked me if I wanted to do it as well and I said "why the heck not!". You should have seen the looks we got when we told people we had gone from Dirty Donkey to registering for our first Spartan, the 28KM, 32 obstacle, mountain obstacle race, the beast. I will never forget the moment I crossed that finish line. I knew at that moment that we had found something special. It made it all the more memorable when Mik, who had finished 2 hours ahead of me, walked me to the car only to open the trunk and show me the large cheque and trophy he had received for placing 3rd. I would have loved to see the faces of those who doubted us for deciding to "go big or go home" at that moment.

If you could be an animal, what would you be and why?

If I could be one animal it would be a Raven. Ravens are powerful, creative, intuitive, fast and mysterious. In many cultures the Raven signifies knowing one’s self inside and out and staying true to who you are, something that I believe in very strongly.

What's your favourite flavour of GORP bar?

Cocoa, Hemp and Almond!

What are your favourite hobbies?

I love to do Yoga. Without Yoga my physical body would not be able to keep up with my mental body. I also love to read. Reading has always been an escape of mine. From a fantasy that takes me into the depths of Middle Earth to learning the ways of the world from Malcolm Gladwell, nothing beats a good book.

Your Hero or Inspiration?

My hero is my Mom, she is a force to be reckoned with. Between managing my big busy family, fueling my love of the outdoors, and working to change the world she is someone who is a role model to many.

My inspirations are the people I surround myself with. I chose to surround myself with fierce strong men and women who inspire me to be better person every day.

How have GORP Clean Energy Bars helped you?

My body and my mind have not always gotten along. My mind may want something; want to be able to do something that my body won’t allow it to do. I found that one of the strongest ways to connect the two was by using physical activity and nutrition. Finding GROP bars was like a breath of fresh air, finally a bar that I can eat and pronounce all the words on the ingredient list, not only can I pronounce them all, I know what they all are!  GORP fuels my mind, body, and taste buds to keep doing the things that I love.

Hash tag. . .what??

Well here i am. . .tail between my legs. . .full of broken blogging promises:( BUT. . .there has been a change in the tides. . . I have come to a new revelation!! AND I have some great new support staff in the GORP office. . . AND these ladies are pretty good at declaring their opinions about me getting back on the blog schedule! I always felt guilty about taking time to blog. . .like I was doing something non-essential (and heaven forbid fun!) while everyone else is toiling away. . ..I got a good talking to the other day and gave myself permission to do this. .. .it's good for my brain. . .and it will hopefully do some good for our awesome GORP community as well:)

Anyways. .. here we are. . .this is year 3 of having GORP on the shelves of stores and this adventure keeps getting more intense and rewarding. .. (albeit stressful!). . .we've landed some pretty neat accounts this past year. . .(Hello northern Canada! Thanks Northwest Company!) and with that comes piles of paperwork full of acronyms and retail math terms that set my head spinning and honestly makes me want to find the nearest rock. . .(you know. . .to hurl through a window shouting. . ."I didn't sign up for this!!!". . .). . except that I did. . .and I'm here. .. and despite the shame associated with being a complete rookie in retail. . .I am lucky enough to have something that propels me forward. . .EVERY SINGLE TIME I GET DISCOURAGED AND WONDER IF WHAT I'M DOING IS WORTH IT. . . THIS HAPPENS. .

It's the phone call from some surfer guy in Tofino. . .(Dan?). . .who was losing his mind on the phone because he just bit into a bar and couldn't help but call the number on the back of the package and shout at our office manager Lisa. . .

"I took one bite and almost sh#t myself with delight. . .you guys rock!"

. . .or the phone message from Helen from Collingwood Ontario who just phoned to tell us she is 62 years young and who after getting to her car with her first GORP bar. . .took a bite and got right back out and bought 5 more. .. she continued to crinkle the wrapper into the end of the receiver and thank us for what we are doing. .. .:)

It's humbling and totally makes up for all the dumb questions I find myself asking the "big guys". . .ummmmm so do I calculate that OIC off the OYR from the wholesale price after I divide by pi or should I just run through that window right there?" (lol!) Seriously. . .I'm learning. . .but seriously. . .

So what I'm getting at is this. . .with all the stress and work/life balance becoming a sheer fantasy. . .I lost my way a bit. . .(#what? wine and chips can't be supper?). . .exer-what?. .I found myself so passionate about inspiring an adventure lifestyle in others that I forgot about letting myself take time to do it too. . ..hence the GORP CHALLENGE idea. . .I pitched it to my new office staffer Jen and she's in. . .for the next 30 days we are on it. . .taking all the best advice and recipes we've personally experienced and love and compiling them into an easy to follow program. .. with a daily challenge to get outside and move for just 30 minutes. . .every single day. There is lots of other fun involved. . .but Jen and I are being the guinea pigs for 30 days. . .we will share our ideas and results and then launch a fine tuned plan coupled with a challenge (perhaps some rad prizes!) to our awesome GORP community:)

Lots of fun to come. . .boy does it feel good to get thoughts down on virtual paper. .. #ilovemakingfunofhashtags! Lookout!

. . .adventure on!

story of a start up! ›

Good things come in two's?

So 2015 started out with some unexpected and pretty cool honours for GORP:) A few weeks ago I got an email saying GORP had been chosen as Company of the Year by the Manitoba Food Processors Association! Crazy?! I've been at this a long time. . .but still feel pretty new on the scene since we've only been "officially" on the market for 2 and a half years. . .it felt surreal and pretty heart warming to be noticed by your "neighbours". . .if there is one thing you can be sure of in life, it's that you can't fool your neighbours! They know exactly who you are. . .what a boost and much appreciated sign to keep on putting one foot in front of the other!

The second surprise was being chosen by the readers of Get Out There Magazine for Best Sports Nutrition food of 2014! I feel like GORP is like a tiny little "David" in a GOLIATH marketplace (and an intensely competitive one to boot). . ..I know our marketing budget is probably laughable compared to most of our competitors (what's half of nothing again?. . .oh yeah;). . .so this was especially rewarding. . .power to the people. .. and on that note, THANKS PEOPLE!!!!

It's been a contemplative/overwhelming season for us. .. .what's on my brain is SYSTEMS analysis and finding a way to grow smart and stay small. . .I don't mean small in sales or distribution.  ..but what systems do we implement and what culture activities do we need to come up with in order to honour our customers as we grow. . . .the last thing I want is to be your typical "corporate entity". . ..granted we are a long way off, (so says my banker;) but hey. . .I'm a blue sky long term visionary. . .can't help myself;) So here I sit on this Monday morning. . .a to-do list longer than my arm and a big blank whiteboard waiting for a brainstorm. . .

Let's hit this week hard and remember to BREATH. . .JOKE. . .and find a few moments of PLAYFUL in our day. . .so easy to let the grindstone wear us down. . .sooooo this sounds like the perfect time to issue a challenge. .. .sometime this week. ..pull a prank on a co-worker, family member or kid. . .or whoever is in your vicinity. . . beware. . .you might just make someone's day. . .at the very least, there will be smiling involved;)

Be Community!

Excellent Source of Manganese

Gorp bars are an EXCELLENT source of manganese. Manganese aids in the formation of connective tissue, bones, sex hormones and plays a role in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, calcium absorption, and blood sugar regulation. Manganese is also necessary for normal brain and nerve function.
