When choosing a binding agent for our bars, we did our research and settled on this naturally processed sweetener made from sprouted brown rice. It’s produced by treating rice with enzymes from sprouted barley. It is better for diabetics and those looking for sweeteners that won’t spike blood sugar levels the way white sugar can. Brown rice syrup is a complex sugar; therefore it is easily absorbed into our bloodstream, which means there is less time left for fat accumulation. Plus, the complex carbs in this syrup digest slower which helps prolong energy levels and provide a constant supply of energy over a longer time period. It’s considered to be one of the healthiest sweeteners on the market. With a low glycemic index, it won’t cause a sugar rush and subsequent crash. Unlike refined sugars, brown rice syrup contains minerals that carry over from the rice itself. It’s a good source of magnesium and potassium.

Why Does Brown Rice Syrup Give You Long-Lasting Energy?
Brown rice syrup is roughly 50% soluble complex carbohydrates, 45% maltose, and 3% glucose. Glucose is immediately absorbed and metabolized into the bloodstream, maltose takes up to one-and-a-half hours to be digested, and complex carbohydrates take from two to three hours for the energy to be released. This is why it provides such a steady supply of energy. One of the things we hear over and over about GORP bars is that folks are amazed how they actually keep you going throughout the day. We formulated our bars deliberately…no high fructose corn syrup will be found here! We mixed honey from our own canola fields with the brown rice syrup to create a binder that would release energy at many time stages. Who has time for the old annoying crash and burn anyways?
