Prostate Health
From as early as the 1900s, pumpkin seeds have been associated with prostate health and used to treat urinary tract complaints. This old remedy seems to be making a comeback of sorts! It is believed that a component in the pumpkin seed helps stop the over-production of prostate cells, which contributes to BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), or an enlarged prostate. Up to half our population of men over 50 have problems related to enlarged prostate. It constricts the urethra, causing discomfort, urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and may even lead to incontinence. ACK. Pumpkin seeds contain phytosterols, which are responsible for the shrinking of the enlarged prostate gland. They also contain chemicals that may prevent some transformation of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). High levels of DHT are linked with enlarged prostate.

The highest level of zinc accumulates in the prostate compared to any other area of the human body. Pumpkin seeds are a good source of zinc, otherwise known as the “man mineral”, which is vital for proper prostate function and male hormone activity.

Building Up Bones
Women aren’t the only ones at risk for osteoporosis. Men suffer greatly from this disease as well. Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc, which contributes to bone mineral density and helps lessen the risk of breaks and fractures.

A study done by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found a definite connection between the low intake of zinc in the diet and osteoporosis of the hip and spine.

Rich Source of Minerals, Protein, and Healthy Fat
Whether you want to build healthy bones or arm your body with the nutrition it needs to fight off infection and reduce inflammation, a 1/4 cup of pumpkin seeds per day will provide you with approximately these percentages of your RDI for the following minerals:

  • 52% manganese
  • 46% magnesium
  • 28% iron
  • 24% copper
  • 17% zinc
Pretty cool, pumpkin seeds. Pretty cool.
